Team Physicians

A number of Ventura Orthopedic Physicians have been representatives for local schools around Ventura County for many years. While helping assist with game injuries, the physicians enjoy being a part of the team on the side lines. Below is a list of our physicians and the local high schools they represent. Below that is a narrative from each physician on their experience working with their team.

"I participated as a team physician, performing bi-annual physical exams and running the sports medicine clinic at Ventura College from 1984 to 2006. Team physician duties have been turned over to Dr. Ray Nickel beginning in 2006, although I continue to staff the orthopedic sports medicine clinic and assist in providing the bi-annual physical exam program for the student athletes."
-Dr. Robert O'Hollaren

"I have been with the Ventura High School Cougar Football Team since the 2000 season. Along with Dr. Ralph Wilson, we care for the athletes that are injured during daily practices or games, and we provide sideline support at all home and most away games. With the help of our head physical therapist, Steve Edwards, we offer preseason sports physicals for the team, with all proceeds going back to the Ventura High School Football Boosters Club. We also run a free Saturday morning "bumps and bruises" clinic so that any injured athlete who can wait till then can be cared for without having to endure the four hour wait in the emergency room after Friday's game. The best part of being involved with the team is getting to know the players and coaches, and being able to root for the team I'm caring for."
Dr. Thomas J. Horn

"I am the physician for Moorpark High School. This year was my sixth with them. The football team did reasonably well despite having a "rebuilding" year. They had narrow losses to St. Bonnies and Oaks Christian. They did defeat the defending CIF Division II champ and Bay League champ in the first round of the playoffs-Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach- but lost in the second round to Valencia. Line play needs to improve next year, but I have no doubt that the Musketeers will be back and better than ever next year!"
-Dr. Dan Davis

"I have served as team physician for Ventura College since 2007, following Dr. Robert O'Hollaren who had served in that capacity since 1984. Their record this year was 5 wins and 5 losses, which actually was much better than anyone had expected. The loss to Bakersfield was only settled in overtime by three points after VC had led most of the game, and one other game was upset in the final minute. The head coach for 2008 and 2009 abruptly announced he was leaving for another position in the spring of 2010, and Coach Steve Mooshagian was not hired until June of this year, which resulted in a number of players transferring to other institutions because of the perceived uncertainty in the situation. Nonetheless, Coach Mooshagian brought with him tremendous coaching experience (Feather River College, University of San Diego, Sacramento State, Cincinnati Bengals, University of Pittsburgh, Fresno City College and Fresno State) and was able to marshal the players to a much better result than most would have predicted. Several great athletes are reportedly considering playing for the Pirates next year and we look forward to a great 2011 season."
-Dr. F. Ray Nickel

"I take care of Simi High School and Royal High School. I have been there since 1997. This year, I started also taking care of Grace Bretheren High School. I offer physicals for the schools, 4 times a year, and donate all of the money collected for the physicals back to the high school athletic programs."
-Dr. Gregg Hartman

"I have been the team physician for Oxnard High School Team for 9 years. This year and last year they went to the CIF playoffs. I really enjoy working with this team and the coaches."
-Dr. Craig Zeman

"I have been taking care of Rio Mesa high school since 1995. The school has done well in all their sports programs. They have been Ventura Star sports school of the year the past few years with a generally good performance in all sports. They lost in the first round of the football playoffs this year. We do schools physicals at the high school at the beginning of the academic year. Similarly Craig and I do sports physicals at Oxnard high school at the beginning of the academic year."
-Dr. Mark Ghilarducci
