Biography

Robert O'Hollaren M.D. has been a member of Ventura Orthopedic and Sports Medical Group since 1982. Raised in Ventura County, and a graduate of Nordhoff High School in Ojai, he has a strong commitment to the area. He received his undergraduate degree in Zoology with high honors from the University of California at Santa Barbara. His postgraduate training was at the University of Southern California School of Medicine resulting in the Doctor of Medicine degree in 1977.

Already showing an avid interest in orthopedics, he was selected directly from medical school into the orthopedic residency program at the University of California Irvine Medical Center. He completed his internship in surgery and a four year residency program in orthopedic surgery. This included terms as Chief Resident at the Long Beach Veterans Hospital and UCI Medical Center, as well as training in the latest rehabilitation techniques at the Rancho Los Amigos Hospital in Downey. An early interest in sports medicine was fueled by the emergence of the field of arthroscopic surgery in which he performed the earliest types of the new surgical techniques. He also participated in performing the newest procedures for joint replacement surgery of the knee utilizing techniques developed at the UCI Medical Center.

After completion of the residency program, he returned to Ventura to start practice and was board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery in 1984. His interest in sports medicine led him to open the first sports medicine clinic in Ventura County at Community Memorial Hospital in 1983 where he was director for several years. Appreciating the need for rehabilitation utilizing modern principles of sports medicine, he helped open the first therapy center developed for athletic rehabilitation in Ventura, the Pacific Orthopedic Sports Therapy Center. In 1982 he was asked to develop an athletic medicine clinic at Ventura College, and has been the director of the sports medicine clinic at the college since that time. Dr. O'Hollaren was the team physician for the Ventura College athletic program until 2010. A particular interest in arthroscopic joint surgery has resulted in extensive experience in this area, and he has performed over 2500 arthroscopic procedures in the last 20 years. He has also had an active interest in reconstructive surgery, including hip and knee replacement, and believes that principles of rehabilitation similar to those used in athletic surgery can be used to maximize function after joint replacement.

Dr. O'Hollaren has been an active participant in professional and educational activities in the community. He has served as Director of Physical Therapy and Chief of Surgery at Community Memorial Hospital. A strong believer in a physician's responsibility to the community, he has volunteered his services to the Ventura County Children's Resource Program for many years. With the other physicians of the group he provides free services for the athletic physicals program at Ventura College and as team physician. He has given lectures to nursing, chiropractic, medical, and athletic associations on a variety of orthopedic and sports medicine topics. He is author of several academic articles and has presented material at national Orthopedic Academy meetings.

Dr. O'Hollaren is current President of the California Orthopedic Association. He lives in Ventura with his wife and two children. His interests include surfing, tennis, skiing, fishing, backpacking, and music.
